"One Pilgrim's Experience: Debbie Fickenscher's Pilgrimage to Washington National Cathedral"

On Friday, June 29, St. Patrick's parishioner, Debbie Fickenscher, joined a small group of pilgrims who explored a holy place very near to us, Washington National Cathedral. Bishop Mariann Budde participated in - but did not lead - the pilgrimage. The day included guided meditations as well as time for wandering, wondering, and prayer. Debbie reflects on her experience:

"Just returned from a 4 hour pilgrimage with the new bishop, at the Cathedral…although originally planned for a walk/meditation outside as well as in, the 103 degree heat kept us in.   It was really a powerful experience and even with the heavy mesh hanging protectively overhead, it is still possible to see the vibrant colors of the stained glass windows throughout the nave.

I will share two things from the experience with you.
 The opening poem read several times (Lectio Divina – you hear it once, then the second time listen for words/phrases that leap out, and then a third and then silent meditation)  This really was powerful (and if you don’t know, generally I don’t like poetry):

Praying
by Mary Oliver
It doesn’t have to be the blue iris,
it could be weeds in a vacant lot,
or a few small stones;
just pay attention,
then patch a few words together
and don’t try to make them elaborate,
this isn’t a contest, but the doorway into thanks,
and a silence in which another voice may speak.

The pilgrimage involved focused prayer, silence, a silent procession through the nave, more prayers and reflective time followed by sharing and a blessing.  The procession through the nave went as far as the high altar, but also involved other stops.  When we stopped at the Space Window, this prayer was said:

Weaver of Wonder, you have stretched the net of heaven to catch a school of stars.We celebrate the network of the universe and silently wonder at our own parts in it.We give thanks that within your tapestry, we are safely woven.   AMEN

Have you visited a place this summer that you would call holy ground? Send Kurt or Andrea your reflections and a photo!
